Will EMDR
WORK For ME?
EMDR as an effective therapy approach
EMDR is a trauma-based therapy approach going back to the 1980s. In the decades since, EMDR has been extensively researched and studied, showing to be highly effective with treating trauma and trauma-related conditions.
With a highly effective track records, it's not surprising that EMDR is the therapy recommended by major health and professional organizations including:
-
U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs and Department of Defense (VA/DoD)
-
UK's National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE)
-
International Society for Traumatic Stress Studies (ISTSS)
-
American Psychological Association (APA)
-
Departments of Health in Israel and Northern Ireland
-
World Health Organization
Will EMDR Work For ME?
We don't know you (yet), so this is a difficult question to answer. In the initial appointment and through history taking with a mental health professional, we'll have a better idea if EMDR might be a suitable approach.
What we can say is if the issue that you're seeking therapy for is linked to trauma, there's a pretty good chance EMDR will be helpful.
A note on Trauma
"Trauma" can be a loaded term. In the context of therapy, think of trauma as anything that happened to you that shouldn't have - or anything that didn't happen that should have.
There are "Big-T" traumatic events such as war, extreme violence, sexual assault, physical abuse, natural disasters, life-threatening accidents, near-death experiences, and more.
We also have "smaller-t" traumas like being teased, lack of parental care, public embarrassment, financial hardship, and other persistent pebbles. These experiences can be more common.
While some consider these smaller pebbles as being "part of life", their effects can be long-lasting and detrimental to your wellbeing.
EMDR therapy is an effective tool for dealing with the effects of "Big-T" and "little-t" trauma. If some level of trauma or traumatic event is the root cause of concerns you're dealing with, EMDR can help. An initial assessment and history taking by a therapist is the recommended way to determine the role and impact of trauma in your life.
